Licences

Get the licence your activity needs: FSSAI for food, IEC for import and export, Shop & Establishment, and Udyam.

What it is

Some activities need a licence or registration before you start. FSSAI covers anyone who makes, stores or sells food. An IEC (Importer Exporter Code) is needed to import or export. Shop & Establishment registration is a state requirement for most premises. Udyam registration records you as an MSME (micro, small or medium enterprise).

Who needs it

  • Restaurants, cloud kitchens, food brands and traders (FSSAI)
  • Businesses importing goods or exporting goods and services (IEC)
  • Shops, offices and commercial premises (Shop & Establishment)
  • Small businesses that want MSME benefits (Udyam)

Documents usually required

  • PAN and Aadhaar of the owner or business
  • Proof of the business premises
  • Business registration documents, if any
  • For FSSAI: a list of food products and, for some licences, a layout plan

Questions

About licences

No. Small food businesses need a basic registration; larger ones need a state or central licence. The category depends on turnover and activity.

The government does not charge for Udyam registration. If a professional helps you, their fee is shown before you agree.
