Filing a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, step by step
How to file the official complaint yourself, and what actually happens after you submit it.
Before anything else
File your complaint on the government portal at cybercrime.gov.in — it is free, and the acknowledgement number it gives you is needed at every stage that follows.
- 1
Open the portal
Go to cybercrime.gov.in, choose File a Complaint, and accept the terms. The portal is free and does not require a lawyer.
- 2
Pick the right category
Financial Fraud for money lost, Women and Child Related Crime for harassment or obscene content, and Other Cyber Crime for everything else.
- 3
Verify with an OTP
Use a mobile number you actively check — every status update will be sent to it.
- 4
Describe the incident precisely
Include the date, the time, how it happened and the amount involved. Upload screenshots and transaction receipts as PDF or JPG files.
- 5
Save your acknowledgement number
You will receive it on submission. Use it to track the status online and to follow up in person at your local cyber police station.
- Do not exaggerate or guess at details — inconsistencies weaken the case badly
- Do not stop at the online complaint; an in-person follow-up is what usually moves it forward
